Guitarhi ronnie wires! i'm sure guitarists know what you're using this interval for, lol. right now, the note from which you count may not be the root note of the song. it may only be a note in that song's key.
counting from the root helps to shorten that interval, since you can find the upper or lower octave of that root note, then count backward or forward from it.
example: c# d# e f# g# a b c#
with a root of c# minor, you could count 2 up for the e, and 3 down for the g# (from the upper octave of c#).
so, c# - e (up), or c# - g#(down).
find the song's key, play a scale in that key, and use the root to move to a note, up or down. thanks!
